According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, Mendoza purchased a $10 Jumbo Bucks scratch-off ticket at a Circle K gas station on South Horner Boulevard in Sanford. Upon scratching the ticket, he discovered he had won the top prize of $1 million.
On July 31, Mendoza arrived at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim his prize. He was offered the choice between an annual annuity of $50,000 for 20 years or a one-time lump sum of $600,000. He opted for the lump sum, and after federal and state tax deductions, he walked away with $432,063.
This is not the first time Mendoza has visited the lottery headquarters. Last May, he won a $100,000 grand prize with a Cash Payday scratch-off ticket, meaning both significant wins occurred within a span of just two months.
