The tragic accident occurred on August 21 at approximately 8:15 PM when a 20-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a barrier. Both occupants received initial medical treatment at the scene and were transported to a local hospital.
Investigation into the Crash
In the days following the collision, Caruana's condition deteriorated, and she was pronounced dead on the evening of August 29. Police initially stated only that she died as a result of the accident and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances. The driver sustained injuries but survived.
"We want to surround her in white, light, and love," shared a family member ahead of the funeral.
Subsequent reports suggested that Caruana may have leaned under the seat to retrieve her mobile phone just as the impact occurred, with severe injuries allegedly caused by the airbag deploying at close range. However, police have not officially confirmed this detail, and autopsy results remain pending as the investigation continues.
Community Farewell
Caruana, a resident of Paola, was a dancer with the Lookstar Dancers Tarxien and performed in Malta's famous carnival. Family and friends remembered her as a kind-hearted and gentle young woman with a contagious smile. For her funeral on September 5, the family requested attendees wear white shirts and blue jeans instead of black, bringing only white flowers to celebrate her bright spirit.
