Inmate Fails Daring Hospital Escape Down Fourth-Floor Pipe in India
A prisoner serving a life sentence in India tried to escape Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal by sliding down a fourth-floor pipe, but was recaptured within an hour.
A dangerous prisoner serving a life sentence for murder and extortion attempted a daring escape from the fourth-floor bathroom of a hospital in India, sliding down an external pipe. The unusual incident took place at Hamidia Hospital in the city of Bhopal, where a massive search operation was launched, ending in his recapture before he could leave the medical facility.
The prisoner, Sachendra, known as Sachin Rajput, is serving a life sentence at the central prison in Narmadapuram. To execute his escape plan, Rajput faked a medical emergency, claiming he had swallowed a piece of tin. Although initial tests at a local hospital did not detect any foreign body, he was referred for further examinations at Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, where he was hospitalized under police guard.
The Escape Attempt
His operational opportunity arrived at around 03:00 AM. Rajput asked to enter the fourth-floor restroom while the police officers assigned to guard him waited outside the closed door. After about fifteen minutes, when he did not respond to their calls, the officers broke inside to find an open window and an empty stall: the prisoner had slipped through the narrow opening and begun sliding down a pipe running along the exterior wall in an attempt to reach the ground and vanish under the cover of darkness.
"The prisoner tried to use an external pipe to descend from the fourth floor, but quick action by the security forces prevented him from escaping the premises," local police officials stated.
Recapture and Investigation
Despite his audacity, the escape plan was quickly thwarted. Police forces and hospital staff launched frantic searches across the complex, and about an hour later, Rajput was located hiding on the ground floor near the very pipe he had used to descend. He was immediately captured and returned to custody, and now faces an additional criminal charge for attempted escape. Meanwhile, the police launched a comprehensive investigation to examine the severe security lapse, and local Deputy Police Commissioner Shailendra Singh Chauhan confirmed the sequence of events, clarifying that legal proceedings against him are ongoing.
