According to the sources, the top priority for Lebanon is maintaining neutrality while increasing contacts with international and Arab partners. The goal is to maintain stability and prevent any escalation from spilling over into the Lebanese arena. Despite these statements, Hezbollah threatens to launch an attack against Israel if it takes part in the regional conflict.
Against the backdrop of the expected round of talks in Rome between Israeli and Lebanese delegations, the sources said that the verification mechanism will be a central topic of discussion.
Beirut is interested in having the mechanism managed within the framework of coordination with the American side or UNIFIL forces. Sources in the Lebanese government added that August will be a 'decisive turning point' regarding the future of the security situation in the south of the country, both in terms of completing the implementation of existing understandings and the future of UNIFIL.
According to the sources, Lebanon is increasing contacts with relevant countries to ensure the continuation of the mandate at least until 2027, viewing this as a fundamental component in maintaining stability. Regarding the verification mechanisms for the demilitarization of zones from Hezbollah weapons, the sources stated that Lebanon opposes any arrangement that includes direct participation or supervision by the Israeli side. According to the officials, the Lebanese army is behind the insistence on this principle.
