Silicon Valley Billionaire Peter Thiel Revealed as Buyer of $130M Bel-Air Mansion
Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel has been revealed as the mystery buyer who purchased the iconic Bel-Air mansion Casa Encantada for $130 million at a foreclosure auction.

Peter Thiel Buys Iconic Bel-Air Estate for $130 Million
How do you sell a $130 million mansion? As it turns out, not necessarily in a luxurious hall in Los Angeles. In the case of Casa Encantada, one of the most famous estates in Bel-Air, the auction took place in July behind a fountain in a California strip mall.
The auctioneer sat on a folding camping chair, wore a baseball cap, and conducted one of the most expensive real estate auctions in US history. When bids reached $130 million, it turned out the buyer was not just an accidental private individual. He pulled out a cardboard envelope containing bank checks, paid the amount, and secured one of iconic Los Angeles properties.
It has now been revealed that the acquisition was made by Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, and one of Silicon Valley's most prominent investors.
A Discounted Sale via Foreclosure
Thiel made the purchase through a company, keeping his identity hidden at the time of the auction. Reports indicate he does not plan to move into the estate, but rather renovate it and hold it as an investment.
The price? It is significantly lower than previous asking prices over recent years. In 2019, Casa Encantada was listed for $225 million, and in 2023 its asking price reached $250 million. As recently as April, it was listed for around $170 million. Ultimately, it sold for $130 million in a foreclosure proceeding.
In return, the buyer receives a home that is hard to rival even in the luxury Los Angeles market: built in 1938, the estate spans roughly 34 dunams. It features seven bedrooms and 20 bathrooms, a walnut-paneled library, formal dining and reception rooms, sprawling gardens, a tennis court, and an enormous swimming pool. The property overlooks the Bel-Air Country Club.
A Storied History of Owners
The estate's history is equally extraordinary. In 1980, it sold for $12.4 million, then a record for a private home in the US. In 2000, it sold again for $94 million, once more breaking the national sales record. One of its former owners was Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton hotel chain.
The mansion's most recent owner was businessman Gary Winnick, who purchased it in 2000 and invested heavily in its renovation. Following his death in 2023, it emerged that the property served as collateral for substantial loans. After failing to find a buyer at hefty asking prices, the estate ultimately went into foreclosure and was auctioned off in Pomona.
Now, it passes into the hands of Peter Thiel. Thiel, 58, is a towering figure among Silicon Valley's founding generation. He co-founded PayPal and later established Palantir. He was also Facebook's first outside investor and founded Founders Fund, which invested in SpaceX and other prominent technology companies.
