Depression is often perceived as a mood disorder, but a new study adds evidence that associated changes may reach the level of brain cells. Researchers found that in people suffering from depression, there are disruptions in the process of creating new nerve cells in the hippocampus, a brain region linked to memory and emotion. The study, published on Tuesday, examined human brain tissues and identified changes in neural stem cells and their development into new neurons.

What happens in the hippocampus?

The focus of the study is the hippocampus — a region in the brain that plays a central role in memory, learning, and emotional regulation. Contrary to the old belief that the adult brain does not produce new nerve cells, recent studies indicate that a process known as neurogenesis may continue into adulthood in certain areas. Researchers found that in samples from people with depression, there were changes in pathways related to the creation of new nerve cells. These findings offer a possible glimpse into one of the biological mechanisms involved in the disease.

Not proof that depression "kills brain cells"

It is important to qualify these results: the study does not prove that depression directly causes the cessation of nerve cell creation, nor does it allow for determining whether a person suffers from depression through a brain scan.

The connection between depression and the brain is complex, as the disease is influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. The importance of these findings is primarily research-based: if it turns out that we can influence the identified cellular processes, they may become targets for the development of new treatments. The study strengthens a broader trend in psychiatry: the attempt to move from merely describing symptoms to a more precise understanding of the biological mechanisms occurring in the brain.
