Strategic partner: Jerusalem marks India's Independence Day

The Jerusalem Municipality illuminated the Chords Bridge this evening (Saturday) — one of the capital's most prominent symbols — with the flags of Israel and India side by side. The festive gesture was held to mark 79 years of India's independence as a sign of friendship and appreciation for the strategic and warm relationship between the two countries.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion noted that the city is proud to join India's celebrations, defining the nation as an ally and an important partner of the State of Israel. Lion added that the close relations, which are also reflected in the connection with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are based on shared values and a deep friendship that has been growing stronger over the years.

"On behalf of Jerusalem and its residents, I wish India a happy Independence Day, and I hope for the continued strengthening of the brave bond between the countries and the peoples for many more years," the mayor said.

It should be noted that the relations between Israel and India are defined as a comprehensive strategic partnership, which has strengthened significantly in recent years and is characterized by deep, multi-dimensional cooperation. India is one of Israel's major buyers of weapons and defense technology, while Israel views India as a vital political and economic anchor in Asia.

Beyond the defense and intelligence axis, the ties between the countries include large-scale projects in the fields of agriculture and water, partnerships in technology and cyber, as well as involvement in regional geopolitical initiatives, such as the I2U2 forum and the IMEC trade corridor, which connects India to Europe through the port of Haifa.
