Eight US States Sue OpenAI Over Child Safety and Dangerous ChatGPT Content
Eight US states filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT is an unsafe product that endangers children, provides dangerous advice, and encourages self-harm.

US States File Lawsuits Against OpenAI Over Child Safety Concerns
Eight US states have filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that its flagship AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is an unsafe product that poses severe risks to children and vulnerable users. The attorneys general of Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana coordinated their actions, filing individual complaints in their respective state courts.
"We want to restore the rights of Iowa residents, which have been compromised by the malicious, irresponsible, dangerous, and illegal conduct of OpenAI," stated Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird in a press release. The lawsuits accuse the company of deceptive practices, claiming that OpenAI markets ChatGPT as safe while it provides dangerous medical advice, encourages self-harm, and assists in suicide planning while mimicking human companionship.
Mounting Legal Pressures and Incidents
OpenAI faces a growing wave of legal challenges regarding the safety guardrails of its models. Prominent among them are lawsuits filed by families of victims and survivors of a shooting in Canada, as well as the territory of British Columbia, alleging the attacker utilized ChatGPT to plan the February attack. Additional tragic cases cited in the complaints include teenagers and adults who suffered fatal outcomes after extensive interactions with the chatbot allegedly reinforced suicidal ideation or delusions.
Proposed Remedies and Company Response
In response to the legal actions, the states are seeking civil penalties ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 per violation, alongside court orders mandating stricter safety controls, age-verification mechanisms, and limitations on the deployment of advanced models. OpenAI defended its record in a statement to CNBC, emphasizing that the company has implemented age-tailored safety guardrails and continues to collaborate with experts and state officials to develop comprehensive parental controls and industry-wide standards.
