OpenAI is reportedly in early discussions to raise up to $30 billion in a new funding round that could value the artificial intelligence giant at $1.4 trillion, according to Bloomberg sources. The discussions remain preliminary and subject to change.

Funding and Valuation Milestones

The prospective fundraising round is designed to provide the company with financial breathing room as it defers its anticipated initial public offering. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman noted earlier this month that the company has shelved plans for a public float this year, citing inappropriate timing while the firm prioritizes AI safety amid ongoing concerns over autonomous model proliferation. Investors have shown strong interest in participating, bolstered by the company's steady revenue trajectory.

"The timing is wrong as we focus heavily on AI safety and ensuring our systems remain fully controllable," industry sources noted regarding the delayed IPO plans.

Should the $1.4 trillion valuation materialize, it would mark a significant leap from OpenAI's previous funding cycle. The company closed a massive funding round earlier, achieving a valuation of $852 billion with backing from major global conglomerates. The new valuation would comfortably surpass that of rival firm Anthropic.

Revenue Growth and Technology Roadmaps

OpenAI's annualized revenue has now surpassed the $40 billion threshold, reflecting a 70% growth rate since July. Concurrently, the firm has adjusted usage limits for subscribers of its $200 tier plan. The fundraising push coincides with heightened scrutiny over technological safety. The company recently announced that its new model, GPT-6.1 Astra, will not be released to the market after failing internal safety benchmarks. Altman also expressed support for proposals to institute external human oversight controls to evaluate cutting-edge AI developments.

During its annual DevDay developer conference, OpenAI unveiled a new AI agent named Dots alongside a $500 subscription tier designed to offer expanded processing capabilities and higher execution speeds.
