Ohad Yassin Emerging as Top Contender to Lead Microsoft Israel R&D

Ohad Yassin, currently serving as Corporate Vice President at Microsoft leading the global Sovereign Cloud division outside the United States—overseeing cloud and artificial intelligence services owned by sovereign nations—is emerging as a top candidate to replace Michal Braverman-Blumenstyk as CEO of Microsoft Israel R&D, Globes has learned.
Leadership Transition and Background
Braverman-Blumenstyk announced last month that she will step down at the end of December after six and a half years managing the Israeli development center and 13 years at the company overall. While Braverman led cybersecurity product development alongside her Israeli responsibilities, Yassin hails from a closely related field: sovereign cloud. This relatively young technological sector describes dedicated cloud and AI infrastructure designed to grant nations and enterprises complete control over data, infrastructure, and processing workflows in compliance with local laws and regulations.
Early this year, Yassin earned a significant promotion when he was appointed Corporate Vice President at global Microsoft, taking charge of a network of hundreds of employees in Israel and worldwide. In this role, he leads an operation considered highly strategic for Microsoft in its dealings with governments and sovereign entities.
Challenges Ahead
Yassin's promotion to this prominent global role in January is particularly noteworthy as it places him in a position where he engages directly with countries that may hold critical views of Israel or maintain no diplomatic ties with it at all.
Yassin began his career as an algorithm developer at Israeli firms Ceva and Schema, later joining German tech giant SAP where he became director of engineering and cloud infrastructure operations. He joined Microsoft as head of innovation and incubation, serving for more than seven years as head of the development team for Azure Edge local server products. He has been leading Microsoft's Sovereign Cloud division since late last year.

Yassin will face complex geopolitical dynamics, especially given tensions surrounding Microsoft's commercial ties with Israeli security forces. Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
