Official: Tel Aviv plaza synonymous with the hostage struggle receives new name
For nearly three years, the plaza served as the center of the families' struggle, and now the name that has taken root in the public is receiving official recognition. Mayor Ron Huldai noted that the decision is intended to ensure that this chapter is remembered for generations. The move cements the site's status as a national symbol of Israeli history and ongoing public struggle.
The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality granted official status today, Tuesday, to the name "Hostages Square" at the plaza of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. The new signage was unveiled at a ceremony marking the public struggle that took place at the site since the outbreak of the war, with the aim of commemorating the families' activities and civic solidarity, following the dismantling of the tents there at the end of last year.
Mayor Ron Huldai unveiled the new signage installed at the plaza this morning. The municipal move cements the name that has taken root in the public over the last few years. The site served as the central hub for the families' struggle to return their loved ones starting from October 7, 2023, until the return of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, in January 2026. During this period, rallies, Shabbat receptions, exhibits, and various support activities were held at the plaza, and after the release deals, the public gathered there to mark their return.
After unveiling the sign, Huldai met with representatives of the hostages' families at the nearby Beit Ariela. The municipal cultural center served as a forward base for the families at the outbreak of the war and offered a space for rest, meals, and work meetings. At the same time, the municipality provided logistical infrastructure throughout the struggle period that included tents, electricity connections, and parking solutions, alongside accompaniment and assistance through social services.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Huldai explained the purpose of the commemoration and clarified that history will not be forgotten:
"The decision to call this plaza 'Hostages Square' is intended to ensure that this chapter in the history of the State of Israel will be remembered for generations to come."
According to him, a struggle of families who did everything to bring their loved ones home took place at the site, and the square became a center of mutual responsibility and an uncompromising demand to return everyone. Huldai added that the struggle is expected to enter history books, and the square will remain a testament to the commitment not to give up on anyone.
