The controversial film "NZA" is premiering tonight at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, sparking widespread debate. Outside the venue, the Israeli-American Council (IAC) is projecting footage from the October 7 massacre on massive LED screens mounted on trucks.
The documentary, largely labeled as anti-Zionist, is based on anonymous testimonies of IDF soldiers and criticizes military operations in the Gaza Strip. Protest organizers point out that the film ignores critical context and fails to mention the atrocities that ignited the ongoing war.
Voices of Protest and Resilience
The IAC rally features festival survivors Rom El-Hai and Shai Biton, alongside Yonas Algirnawi, a Bedouin-Israeli who saved dozens of lives during the attack. "Films have editors, history does not," the organization stated. "We will not allow the events of October 7 to be erased from the narrative."
"To screen a film like this without mentioning the hostages, the massacre, or the abuse once is not showing a perspective. It is propaganda," said Sivan, an Israeli living in New York.
The IAC has launched a petition demanding that future screenings include survivor testimonies, balanced panel discussions, and comprehensive background materials. Following New York, the film is scheduled to screen in the Hamptons, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
International and Local Reactions
Israel's Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, strongly condemned the project. "The filmmakers are shameful people. We will not stand idly by or remain silent in the face of their incitement against our heroic soldiers and the State of Israel," he declared.
Meanwhile, audience members at the premiere offered mixed perspectives, reflecting the deep polarization surrounding the artistic expression and its timing amid rising antisemitism in major American urban centers.
