The initial report framed the event as a cockpit dispute between the pilot and co-pilot, despite widespread reports suggesting a suspected terrorist attack.
Following widespread backlash on social media, the newspaper defended its coverage on X. "Our headlines and live coverage contain all the facts we're able to confirm as we confirm them. Unlike activists and partisans, we don't publish speculation or unverified information," the statement read.
Criticism focused on the initial framing that the flight was diverted following a dispute between crew members. Social media users and subsequent reports noted that the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain, attempted to seize control of the aircraft carrying Israeli citizens, and that passengers intervened after a steep dive of about 4,570 meters.
