Norwegian Broadcaster NRK Questions Israel's Eurovision Participation
Norway's NRK sent a letter to the EBU questioning Israel's Eurovision participation, voting integrity, and security measures surrounding delegation member Noam Bitan.
Norway's public broadcaster NRK confirmed it sent a letter to the European Broadcasting Union following the Eurovision Song Contest, expressing concerns regarding Israel's participation. NRK entertainment editor Justad Olseng stated the letter addressed voting integrity and whether the results genuinely reflect the songs, as well as Israel's security arrangements surrounding participant Noam Bitan during the previous contest, which Norway claimed caused fear and uneernation among other participants.
Olseng told NRK that there is suspicion the voting does not reflect the best songs, but rather which country people want to support. He added that the audience might suspect geopolitical or national interests play a larger role than musical quality. In an interview with VG, Olseng noted that NRK views EBU's direction positively, pointing to stricter rules implemented after 2026 and even tighter regulations planned for 2027, alongside greater openness to excluding rule-breaking nations.
The NRK letter stated that broader geopolitical conflicts could overshadow Eurovision's original purpose as a cultural and entertainment contest. According to VG, the letter also questions whether Israel's participation aligns with ESC and EBU values and if it harms the reputation of the contest. Furthermore, the broadcaster's concerns include the heavy security apparatus deployed around the Israeli delegation to protect Noam Bitan from threats and violent incidents, which reportedly created anxiety and distress among delegations from other nations.
