New details on the death of Glen Hansard in a motorcycle accident in Dublin
Irish police are investigating the death of 56-year-old musician Glen Hansard. Preliminary findings suggest he lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a soft road shoulder.
Irish police investigators are checking whether Irish musician Glen Hansard was killed after losing control of his motorcycle when he hit a soft road shoulder, as reported by Dublin Live. Hansard, 56, lead singer of The Frames and an Oscar winner, was killed in an accident that occurred in Dublin around 4:30 AM on Wednesday.
"He did not collide with a tree or anything like that," a source told the site. "The assessment at this stage is that the motorcycle hit a soft shoulder on the road, and that caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Afterwards, it overturned."
According to the report, the forensic collision investigation unit of the Irish police is leading the investigation. Investigators have already determined that Hansard spent part of Tuesday evening at a pub in the area and left when the place closed at the regular mid-week closing time, 11:30 PM. Following the announcement of his death, footage was circulated showing Hansard participating in a musical session at the pub earlier that evening.
Now, the investigation is focusing on the four-hour gap between his departure from the pub and the fatal accident. Police are trying to determine where Hansard was during those hours and to reconstruct his movements before the motorcycle went off the road. According to sources, officers are asking anyone who saw Hansard or his motorcycle during that time frame to contact them.
"Irish police are seeking witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on Wednesday, July 29, 2026," the police statement said. "Shortly before 4:30 AM, police and emergency services were called to an accident involving a motorcycle."
"The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter," it was further stated. "The road has since been reopened. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the event to contact them. Road users who may have relevant footage, including dashcam footage, and were driving in the area at that time, are asked to provide the footage to investigators."
On behalf of the family, it was announced that a public memorial service for the singer will be held at the historic Baroque chapel at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and his funeral will be held at St. Patrick's Cathedral in central Dublin.
