A powerful storm in the northeastern US left over 70,000 without power on Saturday, prompting severe flood warnings, evacuation orders, and widespread travel disruptions.
More than 70,000 residents were left without power in the northeastern US on Saturday as a powerful storm struck the region, threatening dangerous conditions through the weekend.
Storm Warnings and Flooding Risks
The National Weather Service warned of severe winds capable of knocking down trees and causing road flooding as dozens of people remained in the storm's path. The weather service also warned of dangerous coastal flooding along the Atlantic Ocean, particularly near New Jersey and Delaware.
In the coastal town of Surf City, New Jersey, floodwaters inundated streets and private homes. About 55 kilometers away, in the town of Manasquan, some roads were also submerged.
"We expect a large amount of water in the streets for an extended period," said Mayor Mike Mangan, adding that evacuation orders were issued for some residents.
Impact on Travel and Events
The storm also caused widespread disruptions at airports, with more than 00 flights canceled to and from Boston, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and New York. Cultural and sporting events were also canceled, including Boston Red Sox baseball games and concerts by British singer Ed Sheeran at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
