North Korea Test-Fires Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile Under Kim Jong Un
North Korea test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile supervised by Kim Jong Un, as regional tensions escalate following border incidents and failed tracking claims by Seoul and Tokyo.
North Korea successfully test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile on Saturday under the direct supervision of state leader Kim Jong Un, according to state media reports. The missile was launched from the eastern part of the country and struck a target located 1,000 kilometers away in the sea off the nation's eastern coast, following reports from international news agencies.
Military Objectives and Assessment Gaps
According to North Korean media outlets, the primary objective of the military exercise was to train frontline troops operating the strategic hypersonic weapon system. It also aimed to evaluate the reliability, effectiveness, and mobility of the nation's deterrent force amid potential regional conflicts. However, the South Korean military reported detecting the launch and estimated that the missile traveled a distance of over 700 kilometers toward the sea, highlighting discrepancies between the opposing sides' reports.
Regional Tensions and Official Statements
This latest launch adds to a series of weapons tests conducted by Pyongyang this year, unfolding against a backdrop of severe escalation in the Korean Peninsula. Tensions were further exacerbated following a landmine blast in the demilitarized zone last month that injured South Korean soldiers. Kim Yo Jong, the leader's sister and a senior official in the ruling Workers' Party, publicly mocked South Korea and Japan, claiming both nations failed to properly track the weapon's flight path.
North Korea must continue its efforts to force its enemies to recognize the reliability and lethality of its strategic offensive weapons, stated state media, citing Kim Jong Un.
The North Korean leader reaffirmed that developing a nuclear deterrent remains vital for the country's national security, which has carried out over ten diverse missile tests since the beginning of the year.
