Noah Musingku, who invented a fake kingdom in the South Pacific and defrauded thousands of investors over decades, has died at the age of 62 after a brief illness. His death was confirmed by local officials and the Bougainville independence movement, bringing a close to one of the most bizarre financial fraud sagas in recent history.

Musingku first rose to notoriety in the late 1990s when he established an investment firm named U-Vistract in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. The company promised staggering monthly returns of 100%, luring in thousands of eager investors with the initial illusion of immense wealth. However, the operation was a classic Ponzi scheme, relying on funds from new participants to pay off earlier investors.

As authorities began closing in, Musingku fled to his home village of tono in southern Bougainville. There, he declared himself King Peii II of the fictional Papaala Kingdom and formed an armed private militia to protect himself from law enforcement and angry victims. Despite printing his own currency and living as a self-styled monarch for years, his victims never recovered their lost savings, and the fate of his armed followers remains uncertain following his death.
