NBA Commissioner Adam Silver delivered significant statements on Tuesday following the Board of Governors meeting in New York, providing a crucial update on the league's plans to expand into Europe. Silver confirmed that ongoing discussions with the EuroLeague are progressing smoothly and estimated that additional details regarding the joint venture will be published in the coming weeks.
"We talked about the continuation of talks regarding NBA Europe," Silver shared. "Which I view as a historic opportunity to build on the incredible tradition of European basketball—in the EuroLeague and domestic leagues—and take it to the next level through a combination of new and existing clubs in an NBA-style European competition."
Key Structural Issues
Silver clarified that the NBA aims to begin introducing the new league to the market as early as next summer, even if the initial product is not yet identical to the final envisioned competition. According to the commissioner, essential matters are still being examined, including player salary structures, broadcasting rights unification, division of responsibilities between the league and local markets, and the construction of new arenas across Europe.
"We really see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Historically, in terms of what it might do not just for basketball, but for the sporting landscape in Europe. We want to get this right," Silver emphasized.
When asked whether the NBA is discussing the possibility of taking a controlling stake in the EuroLeague, Silver replied affirmatively, stating that a unified front would ultimately strengthen the sport across the continent.
Disciplinary Action and Team Futures
During the briefing, the commissioner also addressed the heavy penalties imposed on the Los Angeles Clippers following violations of salary cap rules in the Kawhi Leonard case. The franchise lost five first-round draft picks, was fined 30 million dollars, and owner Steve Ballmer was suspended for a year.
Finally, addressing questions regarding the future of the Portland Trail Blazers, Silver made it clear how vital it is for him that the franchise remains in its current home city. "I would view it as a failure if we didn't keep the team in Portland," he concluded.
