Mil Mi-28 Attack Helicopter: Capabilities, Armament, and Combat Role
The Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter combines heavy armor and versatile firepower. Combat experience in Ukraine highlights its role in mobile targeting and aerial artillery.

The Mil Mi-28 stands as one of the most formidable and heavily armed attack helicopters in modern military aviation. Designed to operate as a flying tank, the aircraft combines intense firepower with extensive armor protection, featuring heavily fortified crew compartments and robust landing gear engineered to absorb high-impact crash landings.
Developed as a direct competitor to Western counterparts like the Apache, the Mi-28 features a conventional narrow fuselage and robust twin engines delivering exceptional speed and agility. Its weapon payload is exceptionally versatile, accommodating up to 16 guided anti-tank missiles, heavy rocket pods, aerial bombs, and a chin-mounted 30-millimeter autocannon capable of switching between fragmentation and armor-piercing rounds. Advanced night-vision systems and nose-mounted radar arrays enable comprehensive targeting capabilities in adverse weather conditions.
Combat experience in Ukraine has highlighted both the tactical strengths and operational vulnerabilities of the helicopter. Russian forces utilize the Mi-28 for low-altitude aerial artillery strikes and mobile target elimination, yet combat losses have demonstrated the ongoing threat posed by MANPADS and loitering munitions. Despite these challenges, ongoing modernization programs continue to enhance the aircraft's electronic warfare capabilities and standoff weaponry.
