Microsoft has cancelled a deal with cloud infrastructure provider Nscale to build a data center in the town of Lawton, Essex, in the United Kingdom. According to a report in the British newspaper The Telegraph, the decision was made against the backdrop of repeated project delays and a severe power crisis, after representatives from the National Grid announced that a connection with the required capacity could be delayed until the 2030s.

The cancellation deals a blow to Nscale, a company that provides computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence and is backed by chip giant Nvidia. The move comes as the company prepares for an initial public offering in the United States, targeting an estimated valuation of approximately $35 billion.

The Power Grid Bottleneck

According to the report, Microsoft, considered one of Nscale's two largest clients, decided to terminate the agreement regarding the Lawton site. Reuters noted that Microsoft declined to comment officially on the matter. The ongoing delays in project execution were the primary catalyst for the decision.

The core difficulty stems from local power grid limitations, which are currently unable to timely supply the massive amounts of energy required to power large-scale data centers. National Grid officials clarified to Nscale that a significant connection providing the necessary project capacity is not expected before the 2030s. For technology companies investing astronomical sums in expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, waiting years for power supply can render planned projects economically unviable within the required timeframe.

"The power grid constraints in the London area do not impact our other contracts, and we are exploring alternative energy solutions," an Nscale spokesperson emphasized, assuring investors that the relationship with Microsoft remains solid and long-term.

Challenges Ahead for AI Infrastructure

Nscale specializes in building physical data center infrastructure, including power supply and computing power, alongside developing software for training and running artificial intelligence models. The company operates in a market known as "Neocloud," alongside firms such as CoreWeave, Nebius, and Lambda, which focus on supplying advanced computing infrastructure.

The company has experienced rapid growth over roughly two and a half years, with the volume of its contracts surging from $100 million to over $103 billion. Last month, it filed a prospectus ahead of an initial public offering in the United States, listing Microsoft and Anthropic as key clients.

Microsoft's withdrawal underscores one of the most significant challenges currently accompanying the expansion of the artificial intelligence industry: the ability to supply electricity on the scale required to run data centers. While initial stages of the generative AI revolution focused on securing advanced graphics processing units, such as Nvidia chips, physical infrastructure is now taking center stage.
