For many parents, the first day of first grade brings excitement, preparation, and festive photos. For Israeli television host and food journalist Michal Ansky, saying goodbye to her daughter Gabriel-Lee on her first day of school unleashed an emotional storm that lingered long after she returned home. Speaking on her podcast "The Missing Piece", which she co-hosts with Gali Laur, Ansky shared the moment she felt completely overwhelmed and unable to continue her daily routine.

The Emotional Toll of First Grade

Ansky shared that her daughter refused to pose for a photo near the school gate. Afterward, Ansky went straight home, crawled into bed, and canceled all her scheduled meetings. "I went home, got into bed, canceled all my meetings, and that was it—I simply wasn't available. Now, that's an extreme state," she admitted during the conversation.

Gali Laur explained that the transition to first grade is a massive shift for a child, even when parents try to prepare them in advance. According to Laur, the child enters an entirely new social sphere, meets unfamiliar peers, and copes with uncertainty, while parents are often caught up in the excitement of the milestone.

I went home, got into bed, canceled all my meetings, and that was it—I simply wasn't available. Now, that's an extreme state.

A Shared Transition for Parents and Children

Ansky agreed, pointing out the heavy expectations placed on children in such moments. "An event takes place, and we expect our children not just to enter the event, but to step right into the role we envision for them," she said.

Laur added that the transition is equally profound for parents, as their child grows up and enters a new chapter of life. Alongside joy and excitement, parents grapple with uncertainty over how their child will experience the change and fare in a new environment.

Concluding the discussion, Ansky reflected on how she handles difficult emotions. Unlike the past, when she would push her feelings aside and force herself to keep going, this time she chose to hit the brakes and acknowledge her overwhelming state.
