Michael J. Fox, the beloved Canadian-American actor who turned his Parkinson's diagnosis into one of the entertainment world's most influential advocacy campaigns, received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the Emmy Awards.
Fox, 65, recently emerged from retirement to appear in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, earning his 19th career Emmy nomination this year. Alongside his return to acting, he continues his tireless advocacy and fundraising for Parkinson's research.
A Transformative Legacy
Before taking the stage, a video tribute chronicled his legendary television career and his relentless work to find a cure for the neurological condition. Wheeled onto the stage, Fox accepted the honor to a thunderous standing ovation.
Known for his iconic roles in Family Ties and the Back to the Future trilogy, Fox opened his speech by reflecting on the profound impact comedian Bob Hope had on his life. He later touched upon his initial struggle following his diagnosis at age 29 while filming Doc Hollywood in 1991.
"At first I kept my diagnosis a secret out of fear of losing meaningful relationships," Fox shared from the stage. "Eventually I realized that accepting the disease does not mean surrendering to it."
Advocacy and Return to Screens
Fox went public with his condition in 1998 and stepped away from his starring role in ABC's Spin City in 2000, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation the same year. Though he announced his retirement from acting in 2020 due to increasing speech and memory challenges, he triumphantly returned in 2025 to play a Parkinson's patient alongside Harrison Ford in Shrinking.
The prestigious Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, established in 2002, honors industry figures whose philanthropic efforts reflect enduring altruism. Fox joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and Sean Penn.
