A young couple from the UK has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of murdering the woman's two-year-old daughter, following a prolonged and cruel campaign of abuse. This was reported by the BBC. Alexandra Walker, 26, and her then-partner, Harrison Simpson, 22, were convicted of the murder and cruelty towards the child, Isabel Walsh. Simpson was also convicted of sexually assaulting the toddler.
Simpson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years and 6 months, and Walker was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 22 years. The judge at their trial described their actions as "nothing short of sadistic."

Isabel died in the hospital on September 14 last year, a day after collapsing at home with a fatal head injury. Paramedics called to the scene found her at the bottom of the stairs without a pulse, with numerous bruises on her body, blood in her diaper, and vomit on her face.
An autopsy revealed a horrific picture of prolonged abuse, including 21 broken bones, a fractured skull, brain damage, 97 soft tissue injuries, and severe internal injuries attributed to violent sexual assaults.
The prosecution argued that the toddler was attacked repeatedly over several weeks, and that the murder was the final act in a series of assaults that the two tried to hide. Investigators described the case as one of the most difficult they had ever encountered.
During the trial, it emerged that in the weeks leading up to Isabel's death, Walker refrained from seeking medical help for about two weeks, despite searching the internet for information on "why is my toddler bleeding." In her testimony, she claimed she thought Isabel was already dead, and that instead of calling emergency services, she was busy thinking about how to protect herself.
The court determined that both defendants bear responsibility for the child's death, and that their behavior was part of a deliberate and ongoing pattern of cruelty. While Walker was acquitted of the sexual assault charge, the jury convicted both of murder and cruelty based on the extent and severity of the injuries.

In a separate case reported by the Mirror, a couple from California was sentenced to heavy prison terms for abuse that led to the death of an infant. Samantha Garber, 26, and her partner, Sergio Mena, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse of Garber's one-year-old son, Henry Whitley-Brown, who died in September 2023. According to authorities, Mena put the baby in a bathtub with boiling water and left him there.
Neither of them sought medical treatment for the severe burns the toddler suffered, and instead tried to treat him with an over-the-counter ointment. An investigation revealed a pattern of ongoing abuse, including second and third-degree burns, bruises, and healing fractures on both his arms. Mena was sentenced to 21 years in prison, and Garber to 14 years.
