Meta Hires MongoDB CEO C.J. Desai to Lead New Enterprise AI Division
Meta has established a new enterprise AI division, hiring MongoDB CEO C.J. Desai to lead the initiative. The unexpected departure caused MongoDB shares to plummet by over 15%.
Meta is establishing a new division focused on developing AI platforms and tools for enterprises, hiring MongoDB CEO C.J. Desai to lead it. Desai will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The announcement triggered a sharp drop of more than 15% in MongoDB shares.
Desai, who served in his role at MongoDB for less than a year, will lead Meta Enterprise Platform—the new operation through which Meta seeks to expand its footprint in the enterprise AI market. Initially, the platform will consolidate a suite of tools including the Muse AI agent, developer tools, and business-oriented products. Meta plans to leverage advantages that very few other companies possess: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of close collaboration with numerous businesses, Zuckerberg wrote in the announcement.
The board of directors of MongoDB, an American software company that develops cloud and enterprise database platforms, announced the appointment of former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO. Desai had replaced Ittycheria, who served as CEO for 11 years, in November 2025. Previously, Desai served as President of Product and Engineering at Cloudflare. MongoDB has lost nearly a quarter of its market value since the beginning of 2026.
Desai's move comes as Meta undergoes a sweeping strategic shift, betting big on new AI-based products and services for enterprise customers. Against the backdrop of this change, investors are demanding to see returns on the company's massive investments in infrastructure and new AI tools. The social media giant's entry into the AI agent market with the Muse personal assistant has seen widespread consumer demand. The application even surpassed OpenAI's ChatGPT to reach first place in the free app rankings.
