Meta Builds 27 Billion Dollar AI Data Center in Rural Louisiana
Meta is building a 27 billion dollar AI data center in rural Louisiana, partnering with Entergy to construct massive new power infrastructure amid local economic growth and rising housing concerns.
Meta is investing 27 billion dollars to build the massive Hyperion data center in Holly Ridge, Louisiana, transforming a quiet rural area into a global infrastructure hub for artificial intelligence. Entergy Louisiana is constructing dedicated power infrastructure for the project, including two natural gas-powered plants. According to Troy Heitman, vice president at the company, this is the largest project Entergy Louisiana has ever built for a single customer, comparable in scale to building nuclear power plants. The power plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2028, and Meta's Hyperion data center is slated to go online by 2030.
Economic Boom and Local Strain
State leaders are presenting the project as a major growth engine, promising over two billion dollars in property taxes, 200 million dollars for road and water infrastructure investments, and more than 6,500 construction jobs. District Treasurer Emmett "Lee" Brown estimates that after state tax exemptions, Meta will pay Richland Parish about 30 million dollars in property taxes over the next three years, compared to 22 million dollars collected across the entire parish last year. The project has also brought about 4,000 new residents to a county of roughly 20,000 people, directly impacting local businesses.
"The project is bringing unprecedented economic activity, but it also challenges our traditional way of life and housing affordability," local officials note regarding the rapid transformation.
Regulatory Concerns and Housing Pressures
Not all residents view the project as an unalloyed blessing. Rents in the area have jumped from a few hundred dollars to roughly 2,500 dollars a month, pricing out many longtime residents. Meanwhile, the Alliance for Affordable Energy has warned that Entergy bypassed standard regulatory proceedings to expedite the approval of power plants, raising concerns that local ratepayers could be left holding the maintenance costs if Meta fails to meet its long-term commitments. Meta stated that the Hyperion site was never designated as residential land and emphasized its commitment to local hiring and community investment.
