A deeply touching moment unfolded at the Melbourne Marathon in Australia, as Nick Morrison completed a 42.2-kilometer course while pushing his 21-year-old cousin, Toby Holt, in a wheelchair. Yet in the very final moments of the race, right before the eyes of their cheering family, Morrison made a decision no one will ever forget: he stopped just short of the finish line, lifted his cousin out of the wheelchair, and carried him in his arms so they could cross the line together.

A Rare Condition and a Family's Mission

Holt, a resident of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, was diagnosed four years ago with juvenile Huntington's disease, a rare hereditary condition that progressively impairs movement and speech for which there is currently no cure. Ever since the diagnosis, his family has strived to create as many unforgettable experiences for him as possible, including trips to the United States and New Zealand, extreme sports activities, and even skydiving.

According to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the idea for the marathon originated with Morrison, who lives in Brisbane. When he approached his aunt Louise, Toby's mother, to suggest taking her son along for the race, she could barely believe it. "I had no words in that moment. Marathons are no easy feat, especially when you have to push Toby," she shared. "I am so proud of the man he is and the love he holds for Toby."

Crossing the Finish Line Together

Morrison prepared rigorously for the challenge with the help of a running coach, even enlisting a friend to practice pushing a person during training sessions. On the day of the race, the duo joined more than 20,000 participants as family members cheered them on along the route.

"We stopped right before the line, I helped Toby out of the chair, and I carried him across the finish line," Morrison recalled. He noted that he wanted them both to cross it as equals, ensuring his cousin experienced finishing the race on his own feet. Beyond the family bonding, the pair managed to raise over 4,000 Australian dollars for Huntington's Australia, an organization supporting patients and their families.
