McDonald's has announced a massive 8.5 billion dollar investment plan over the next decade to modernize tens of thousands of branches worldwide. Despite the ambitious scope, Wall Street reacted with concern to the hefty price tag, sending the company's shares plunging by roughly 5%.

AI Integration and Efficiency

CEO Chris Kempczinski presented the strategy to investors to combat stagnant customer traffic in the US and globally. At the core of the technological revolution is the implementation of artificial intelligence systems, including the "ArchIQ" inventory management system developed with Google, and the "Archy" drive-thru ordering system boasting 90% accuracy. The company reassures that the technology, which will save about 50 weekly labor hours per average branch, will not lead to layoffs but rather reallocate workers to improve customer service.

Adapting to Dietary Trends

Alongside the tech overhaul, McDonald's is preparing for a dramatic shift in dietary habits. Recognizing that approximately 30 million Americans using GLP-1 weight-loss medications are seeking smaller, protein-rich meals, the chain will launch grilled chicken sandwiches and egg-based dishes, alongside expanding a hand-breaded chicken pilot designed to compete with rivals like KFC.

"Restoring foot traffic to our branches is our absolute top priority," company executives stressed to franchisees, emphasizing the need for close cooperation to keep menus accessible.

Affordable Value and Franchisee Support

Despite the upgrades and targeting of new audiences, McDonald's acknowledges persistent economic pressure on consumers. Kempczinski clarified that the company will continue focusing on affordable meals and discounted basic items, providing financial support to franchisees required to dig deep into their pockets to meet the new brand standards.
