Ahead of El Clasico, Barcelona has found another reason for pride off the pitch. A report published by the Catalan newspaper Sport reveals a massive gap in the contributions of academy graduates between Spains two biggest rivals. While Hansi Flick gives a central role to players who came through La Masia, the picture at Real Madrid is entirely different, with nearly the entire squad built on players brought in from outside. The numbers vividly illustrate the difference: Barcelona academy graduates have played nearly 13 times more minutes this season than those of Real Madrid.

According to the investigation, nine La Masia graduates have already featured for the senior team this season, accumulating a combined 4,260 minutes, during which they contributed 18 goals and 23 assists. In contrast, Real Madrid has deployed only one player with a background in its youth system, Alvaro Carreras, who logged 331 minutes with one goal and one assist. This represents a gap of nearly 13 times in playing minutes, nine times in the number of players, and 18 times in goals. The Catalan advantage in assists is similarly immense at 23 to just one.

The list of La Masia graduates who have played this season includes Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Xavi Espart, Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal. Bryan Fariñas is the only youngster in Flicks squad who has yet to make an official debut. At Real Madrid, meanwhile, Carreras is the sole academy representative to play this season, and even he returned to the club only after being re-signed from Benfica last summer for 50 million euros. Raul Asencio and Pitarch are still waiting for their first minutes under Jose Mourinho.

The most surprising statistic published by Sport concerns a Real Madrid player who actually grew up at Barcelona. According to the report, Marc Cucurella, a La Masia graduate, logged 753 minutes this season for Los Blancos, more than double that of Carreras, the local youth products sole representative. In other words, even within Real Madrids squad, the presence of the Catalan academy is greater than that of La Fabrica in terms of playing time between these two players.

Sport made no secret of its satisfaction with the findings, arguing that the gulf reflects two entirely different models of building a football team. While Barcelona continues to lean on players who grew up together for years, such as Yamal, Cubarsi, and Espart, Real Madrid prefers to recruit players from outside, often at exceptionally high prices. The newspaper argued that these data should provoke thought among Los Blancos fans who take pride in their youth setup but rarely see its graduates given opportunities in the senior squad.
