Former Yahoo CEO and prominent Silicon Valley figure Marissa Mayer has launched a new artificial intelligence startup named Dazzle, marking her return to the tech industry's forefront. Launched in September, the venture introduces an AI personal assistant tailored primarily for women to help manage daily household and administrative tasks.

Dazzle operates by analyzing photos in a user's smartphone gallery to offer personalized recommendations, execute tasks, and answer queries. According to Fortune magazine, Mayer's startup has secured $8 million in funding at a $35 million valuation, backed by a team of roughly ten engineers. Mayer noted that the tool can plan birthday parties, find lost items, and assist with shopping.

The product launch, however, sparked considerable controversy following an interview with The New York Times. Mayer shared that she used Dazzle to generate a birthday presentation for her 10-year-old daughter Mariella, using the AI to summarize her personality traits. Social media users and critics accused Mayer of emotional detachment and outsourcing basic parenting tasks, raising broader questions about whether AI tools might distance parents from their children.

Mayer later clarified that she utilized the prototype to test its capabilities rather than out of necessity. Beyond the criticism, Dazzle enters a fiercely competitive market dominated by tech giants such as Meta and OpenAI, while also navigating user privacy concerns regarding gallery access. Nevertheless, Mayer remains optimistic, asserting that AI can significantly reduce the mental load on working women and help bridge the gender gap in technology.
