Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in central London on Saturday, marking three years since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. Demonstrators marched toward Whitehall, demanding an immediate halt to British arms shipments to Israel and the imposition of economic and political sanctions.

Heightened Police Security and Special Powers

London's Metropolitan Police deployed a heavy security presence, utilizing special powers under the Public Order Act. Authorities warned that anyone refusing to remove face coverings intended to conceal identity or intimidate would face immediate arrest.

We know this event, taking place so close to the third anniversary of the terror attack on Israel, has the potential for a deeper and more tense impact on local communities than previous marches, said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Carl Galvin.

Concurrently, pro-Israel counter-protesters organized by the Stop The Hate group gathered outside Scotland Yard headquarters, with large police forces separating the rival demonstrations to prevent violent clashes.

Diplomatic Crisis and Interim Compromise

In parallel, a severe diplomatic crisis between Israel and the United Kingdom reached a critical juncture following a 30-day ultimatum issued by Jerusalem. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced the effective closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem and the expulsion of 20 British diplomats over sanctions imposed by the Labour government.

Following intense negotiations and a blitz visit by British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, a temporary compromise was reached. Israel stripped the diplomatic mission of its official consular status and removed its sign, but permitted a reduced team of seven diplomats to remain operational. London stated that the facility will continue to function under the name British Delegation, Jerusalem, to provide essential services to Palestinians.
