Lod Court Sentences Man to Four Years in Prison for Terror-Financing Ring
A Lod court sentenced Suhail Bashir to four years in prison for smuggling cash from Israel to the West Bank to fund Hamas, concluding a major terror-financing case.
The Central District Court in Lod sentenced Suhail Bashir to four years in prison on Monday after he was convicted on his own confession of three counts of illegal transactions involving terrorist property. Bashir smuggled large sums of cash from Israel to the West Bank on three occasions within a week, acting under the clear suspicion that the funds were intended to assist, promote, or finance severe terrorist acts, or to reward their execution.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Michal Barak-Nevo imposed a suspended sentence, a 170,000 shekel fine, and ordered the forfeiture of 30,000 shekels in cash seized from him. Bashir is the last of six defendants to be sentenced in the extensive cash-smuggling ring operating between Israel and the West Bank.
According to the verdict, the funds were intended to finance terrorist activities by Hamas and other organizations. While some defendants acted knowingly, Bashir was convicted of carrying out the acts while strongly suspecting their illicit nature, transferring roughly 200,000 shekels and 150,000 dollars in cash during February 2025.
"I take myself back to that week... and I ask myself, what went through my head? Why did I become part of something like this?" Bashir stated in court, expressing deep remorse and attributing his actions to financial distress rather than ideology.
Judge Barak-Nevo emphasized the critical need for deterrence in national security offenses, noting that Bashir's lack of a criminal record makes severe punishment necessary to deter others from similar offenses.
