Family and Friends Honor Murdered Israeli Footballer Lior Asulin on His Birthday
Family and friends marked what would have been the 46th birthday of murdered footballer Lior Asulin with a celebration of life, remembering his vibrant spirit.

Family, friends, and former teammates gathered this week to commemorate what would have been the 46th birthday of former Israeli footballer Lior Asulin, who was murdered by terrorists at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023.
Instead of a traditional somber memorial, Asulin's family chose to honor the charismatic striker's vibrant spirit with a barbecue and a celebration of life, just hours after holding a memorial service at the Ra'anana cemetery. "Last year barely anyone came, and that is not the kind of memorial Lior would have wanted," said his ex-wife, Moran. "So this year we are doing what he loved: inviting people and celebrating life."
Asulin, one of the most colorful players in Israeli football history, was remembered by loved ones for his generosity, big heart, and infectious joy. His career included notable stints at Maccabi Herzliya, Beitar Jerusalem, and Bnei Sakhnin, where he won the State Cup under coach Eyal Lachman. Lachman recalled Asulin as an indomitable figure on the pitch, stating, "He looked like an immortal figure, someone who would survive everything and always land on his feet."
Survivors and family members also shared harrowing details of the events of October 7. Asulin had initially planned to skip the festival due to fatigue, but ultimately decided to attend. During the ensuing massacre, Asulin was shot inside a vehicle as terrorists targeted festivalgoers near the Mefalsim intersection.
Close friends and relatives continue to keep his memory alive through various tributes, including a clothing brand named "Koku 43" launched by his close friend Sharon Gormezano, referencing Asulin's nickname and age at the time of his death. Memorial matches and ongoing gatherings across the country reflect the deep void left in Israeli sports and among those who knew him.
