A large-scale study published in the journal 'Communications Psychology' and conducted by researchers from the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca reveals that dreams are not merely random mental noise, but a dynamic process directly influenced by our personality and the world around us.

To understand the mechanisms of sleep, researchers collected detailed records of thousands of dreams and daily experiences from 287 participants aged 18 to 70 over a two-week period. This data was supplemented by information on their sleep habits, character traits, and cognitive abilities. To analyze the vast volume of text, the team utilized artificial intelligence software capable of identifying connections and meanings between concepts with an accuracy comparable to that of human researchers.

The findings demonstrate that the brain does not reproduce the day's events verbatim; instead, it synthesizes memories, emotions, and imagination into new narratives where familiar locations intermingle with foreign environments. The nature of this process varies by individual: those prone to daydreaming during the day tend to experience fragmented dreams that jump rapidly between scenes, while those who place great importance on their dreams report rich, tangible, and highly detailed experiences.

Furthermore, the researchers compared these findings with reports collected by Sapienza University of Rome during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. They discovered that during that period, dreams were characterized by powerful emotions and frequent references to isolation. As the public adapted to the situation, these themes gradually moderated. These results confirm that dreams serve as a tool for the psyche to process stress, manage emotions, and adapt to life changes over time.
