Lightspeed Launches $250 Million Fund to Target AI Startups in India
Silicon Valley venture capital firm Lightspeed has launched a dedicated $250 million fund, 'Lightspeed India V', to aggressively target early-stage artificial intelligence startups in India and Southeast Asia.

Silicon Valley venture capital firm Lightspeed is pushing forward with an aggressive strategy in the Indian market, launching a dedicated $250 million fund called "Lightspeed India V". Managing over $65 billion in global assets, the fund is setting its sights on early-stage startups.
According to a letter to investors leaked to TechCrunch, the fund has already secured 80% of its target and will begin making investments within the next two months. The stated goal is to focus heavily on artificial intelligence technology in India and Southeast Asia.
Lightspeed believes this represents a technological earthquake, estimating that AI will create significantly more economic value in India than the internet did. Although India has yet to produce a global AI model to rival the US or China, the fund is betting on the country's massive developer pool to drive the creation of application layers for consumers and businesses.
Lightspeed is no stranger to the AI craze, having invested globally in giants such as Anthropic, Databricks, and Elon Musk's xAI. In India, it has backed Sarvam AI, one of the country's leading AI companies chosen by the government to develop local language models.
The new fund marks a shift in direction for Lightspeed, which previously diversified its investments across sectors like quick commerce (Zepto) and enterprise software. With a fund half the size of its 2022 predecessor ($500 million), Lightspeed is signaling a desire to move faster and lead the next wave of innovation.
