Israeli Stand-up Comedian Reveals Why He Staged a Suicide Attempt
Stand-up comedian Daniel Chen, creator of the hit series "Bad Boy," opens up to Erez Tal about his difficult past, including a staged suicide attempt during his youth.
Stand-up comedian Daniel Chen, creator of the hit Netflix series "Bad Boy," which is based on his life story and is expected to return for a new season, will reveal particularly personal details tomorrow (Friday) in an interview with Erez Tal on the program "What Really Happened There?" on Keshet 12.
During the interview, Chen was asked about one of the shocking events from his past, when he staged a suicide attempt while staying at an institution for juvenile delinquents. In response, he replied:
«I liked the research, very good. Yes, I staged a suicide attempt so they would send me home.»
Chen explained that at that time, he was in conflict with the social worker at the facility and hoped that the move would lead to his release. Later in the interview, he admitted that his plan did indeed work, but not as he had expected:
«The move worked, but they didn't send me home. They sent me to Abarbanel.»
With this, he referred to his hospitalization at the mental health center. When Erez Tal asked him how he remembers the period at Abarbanel, Chen replied with his characteristic humor:
«It was fun. There were interesting people there, a circus like no other.»
Afterwards, he added with some seriousness: «There, I think, my first smile appeared.»
Chen's life story has already gained wide exposure through the series "Bad Boy," which describes his complex childhood and the path he took until he became one of the most prominent stand-up comedians in Israel. Now, he returns to the difficult stations of his past and tells about them with candor, alongside the humor that accompanies his story even in the most complex moments.
