Daniel Riggs, a yoga teacher and content creator, navigates a complex family reality that includes the loss of her mother, a brother on the autism spectrum, and a father who, following a long struggle with alcohol addiction and a severe head injury, now requires constant care. Instead of sinking into hardship, she documents her unique connection with her father and brother on social media, touching the hearts of many. Recently, her viral video, in which she takes her father out of a nursing home for a “date” in honor of Tu B'Av, illustrated her unique path of converting pain into love.
“I create a bridge in my life and for others to truly show the soul behind the person,” Riggs says of her work. The path to reconnecting was not simple; she describes years of estrangement and anger toward her father, whose addiction had completely transformed him.
“The addiction caused him to turn from an amazing person into a monster,” she shares with pain.
The dramatic turning point came after his head injury, when her father was in a coma and in danger of death. According to Riggs, being close to losing him blurred the marks of the past and surfaced a profound longing for love. Where anger once ruled, a new choice emerged: “In the end, we want life; we choose life.”
This choice of life and love is fully expressed in Riggs’s unique connection with her brother, Mikey. Their relationship, conducted on equal terms, is mutual and moving. From her perspective, it is a connection free of barriers, where she learns a great deal. She explains the purity of their bond in one sentence: “We truly see each other’s soul.”
However, Riggs emphasizes that she does not neglect herself and manages to balance caring for her family with her personal life, as evidenced by her three-month trip to Thailand. She explains that her presence on social media not only creates a bridge for others, but also builds a supportive community environment for her. She believes this philosophy is what allows her to live a full life: “As long as I believe and go along with love — everything comes to me.”
