Europe in Flames: 326,000 Evacuated as "Firestorm" Threatens Bordeaux
France and Spain are battling historic wildfires. In southwestern France, a fire creating its own weather system is within 15 km of Bordeaux. In Spain, the largest fire in the country's history has consumed 500,000 dunams, leading to a national state of emergency.
France and Spain continue to battle giant wildfires that have been raging for several days, forcing the mass evacuation of more than 326,000 residents and tourists. While the fire that threatened Madrid over the weekend has moved south, Spanish firefighters are simultaneously struggling with a new, massive blaze in the Valencia region.
In France, efforts are focused on protecting the "wine capital" of Bordeaux, with flames now just 15 km from the city. So far, 250,000 people have been evacuated, the vast majority from the Gironde department. The fire, which began last Wednesday, has consumed 420,000 dunams of land. Authorities report that at least 240 homes have been destroyed, and dozens of firefighters have been injured.
"Firestorm" and Looming Heatwave
Experts note that the fire near Bordeaux is so intense that it has triggered a "firestorm"—a rare phenomenon where large wildfires create their own weather systems, including strong winds and lightning that accelerate the spread of flames. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave stated that despite the fire's proximity, there are no immediate plans to evacuate the city itself.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin described the situation as unprecedented. A new heatwave is expected on Wednesday, with temperatures in the southwest reaching 40°C, complicating the efforts of the 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 soldiers, and 1,200 police officers currently on the ground.
French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency government meeting, promising to rehabilitate the disaster-stricken areas and praising the nation's unity in the face of the crisis.
Situation in Spain and Italy
In Spain, at least 76,000 people have been evacuated. The fire in the Ávila region, which has consumed 500,000 dunams, is now the largest in the country's history. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that 1.5 million dunams have burned since the start of the year—six times the area lost during the same period last year.
Italy is also facing multiple blazes, including ten major fires in Sicily. In Puglia, 400 tourists were evacuated by boat from a beach near Peschici after land escape routes were cut off by fire.
Scientists warn that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. According to the EU's "Copernicus" service, Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, creating ideal conditions for these massive wildfires.
