"The authorities know him": A Ramat Gan resident was attacked and cries out about negligence
A Ramat Gan resident, Shani Ben Giat, reported a serious assault near a local kiosk. According to the victim, the attacker is known to the police, but the lack of prompt action by law enforcement leaves residents feeling vulnerable.
A series of harassment and violent threats on the streets of Ramat Gan recently reached a peak following a serious attack outside a neighborhood kiosk, illustrating the ongoing sense of terror caused by a serial aggressor known in the public space.
Shani Ben Giat, a resident of the neighborhood who was attacked along with her friend, recounted the moments of the incident in an interview with the program "HaOlam HaBoker":
"We arrived at the kiosk under my house, the man came up to my friend and spat on her from point-blank range. The kiosk owner grabbed him by the shirt, and we called the police. They said it would take time to arrive, and they only showed up after 40 minutes."
Ben Giat highlighted the background of the daily fear in the neighborhood, which has persisted for years:
"The municipality and the police are aware of him; even the policeman who arrived described the person to me. The first complaint against him was opened in 1997, and it feels like negligence. I grew up in this neighborhood, and there were always incidents with him. Over the years, he only gets more violent."
The ongoing failure and lack of security in daily life take a heavy toll on residents, especially women who feel helpless in public spaces. "I am unequivocally looking for an apartment elsewhere. I grew up here and chose to rent an apartment here in my adult life because I thought I had security, but I was proven wrong," she added.
Response of the Ramat Gan Municipality:
"Already a week ago, the mayor instructed the municipal patrol to increase and focus patrols in the vicinity of the intersection of HaYarden and Negev streets to deter and increase the sense of security. It is important to emphasize that every case of assault must be reported to the Israel Police, as enforcement authority lies exclusively with them. For privacy reasons, we cannot comment on the personal background and medical condition of the resident in question."
Response of the Israel Police:
"Police officers located the suspect; he was arrested and, following his interrogation, was imprisoned. This morning, he will be brought to court for a hearing on his case."
