Lebanese President Asks Greece for Support in Implementing Israel Deal
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged Greece to support the implementation of the Israel-Lebanon framework agreement during his visit to Athens, shortly after a major Israeli-Greek defense deal.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called on Greece yesterday to support the implementation of the US-brokered agreement signed with Israel. The diplomatic move comes shortly after Greece and Israel announced a historic $3.5 billion defense deal supplying air defense systems to Athens.
Direct Talks and Framework Agreement
Israel and Lebanon have engaged in direct talks to end hostilities after Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into a regional conflict. In late June, both nations signed a framework agreement calling for the disarmament of Hezbollah, the gradual withdrawal of the IDF from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
"Lebanon and the Lebanese people are tired of wars. The goal from the beginning of negotiations with Israel was to put an end to the state of hostility," said Aoun during his meeting in Athens.
Regional Diplomacy and Defense Ties
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Aoun discussed the security situation and the preservation of the ceasefire. Greece maintains historical ties with Lebanon while tightening its strategic alliance with Israel, highlighted by the recent $3.5 billion defense agreement.
Aoun also requested continued Greek support for the Lebanese military and diplomatic assistance at the United Nations regarding the UNIFIL mandate, which faces strong opposition from the US and Israel.
