The demented neighbor complained about an imaginary dog: The regular call to the police led to love
Ruth, who was pregnant and on her way to becoming a single mother, had to explain repeatedly to police officers that she did not have a dog. The community police officer who arrived to restore order could not close the case - but he stayed and became her partner and a father figure in her daughter's life.
About six years ago, 45-year-old Ruth Margolin from Tel Aviv was pregnant, preparing to become a single mother by choice. However, at that time, an elderly neighbor in the building, who was dealing with dementia, began calling the police repeatedly following incidents he claimed were happening around him.
One of the complaints that kept recurring concerned Margolin's dog, which, according to the neighbor, used to dirty the doormat at the entrance to his apartment. There was only one small problem with the complaint: Margolin did not have a dog at all.
"I was in an advanced stage of pregnancy and found myself explaining over and over to the police officers who arrived at the building that I didn't have a dog," she recalls with a smile. "At a certain stage, it almost became a joke. Each time another patrol car arrived, and I just wanted someone to manage to restore order."
After countless calls to the 100 emergency line, it was decided to involve the community police officer of the area, Chief Warrant Officer Dudi Rosenfeld. He arrived as part of his duties to deal with the ongoing situation. He may not have managed to solve the problem with the neighbor completely, but the police mission took a turn that neither of them could have expected.
"I wasn't looking for a relationship," says Margolin. "I was in a completely different place in life. I had made a decision to become a mother and was focused on that. I certainly didn't imagine that out of this whole absurd story, a person would enter my life who would eventually become my family."
And then Alma was born.
After the birth, Rosenfeld came to visit the new mother. The visit, which was supposed to be a friendly gesture, became the beginning of a new chapter. The connection between them deepened, the two became a couple, and Rosenfeld became a father figure in Alma's life.
"He came to visit after the birth and simply stayed," says Margolin. "In the end, it turned out that my path to motherhood started as a plan to be a single mother, but life wrote a completely different script."
Today, just before Alma starts first grade, they still laugh about the unconventional way their family was born. Out of all the calls that reached the 100 emergency line, it was precisely the complaint about a dog that did not exist that led to an event that changed their lives.
And only one "case," from Margolin's perspective, still remains open: "I remind Dudi to this day that although he arrived as the police officer who was supposed to solve the problem with the neighbor, he never really managed to close the original mission. Apparently, instead of closing the case, he simply joined the family."
