The dramatic sacrifice of Israelis: what they will do for their dog
A new and unusual survey reveals surprising data on the attitude towards beloved pets in Israel, how many of us sleep with them in bed, and which is the most popular breed that has conquered the country.
In honor of International Dog Day, Royal Canin conducted a survey that reveals how much dogs have become an inseparable part of the family unit in Israel. Almost a quarter of the public, or 24% of the population, raise a dog, and the overwhelming majority, 88% of dog owners, see it as a family member in every respect. This deep emotional connection is also reflected in daily conversations: 94% of owners report that they talk to their dog as if it understands every word.
What characterizes the Israeli dog is that most are mixed breeds (61%), and almost half are small, weighing up to 10 kg. Among purebred dogs, the Shih Tzu takes first place in popularity at 18%. The most encouraging figure shows that adoption from a shelter is the most common way to bring a new friend home (39%), alongside 25% who received their dog from friends and 9% who picked up a stray.
Devotion to the four-legged friend also directly affects lifestyle: 45% of dog owners will cancel a planned vacation abroad if they do not find a suitable arrangement for the dog, and only 13% will travel anyway.
This closeness continues at night: 47% of dogs sleep in the owners' bedroom, and 17% share the bed with them. In light of this close proximity, experts emphasize the importance of personalized nutrition and precise medical care according to breed, age, and weight to ensure our best friend a long and healthy life.
