The South Korean tech giant is expected to unveil an exceptional plan in its scope for returning value to shareholders, against the backdrop of the boom in the artificial intelligence chip market.

According to Reuters, Samsung's board of directors is expected to convene towards the end of August to discuss and approve the new policy, with reports suggesting the scope of the plan could exceed 100 trillion South Korean won, or approximately $72 billion. This represents one of the largest moves of its kind in the technology industry.

The emerging plan is expected to include the allocation of about 50% of Samsung's free cash flow for the benefit of shareholders. Among the options being examined is the distribution of a special cash dividend, in addition to the regular dividends the company distributes.

The background for the move is the significant improvement in Samsung's financial situation, which is benefiting from the boom in the memory chip market. The demand for chips used in artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers has grown significantly, translating into substantial revenues and cash flow for hardware manufacturers.

By the end of June 2026, Samsung's net cash reached about 167.59 trillion won, almost double compared to the same period last year. The sharp increase in cash reserves gives the company a wider range of action regarding investments, dividends, and share buybacks.

The move also comes against the backdrop of competition with SK Hynix, one of Samsung's main rivals in the memory chip field. The competing company announced a share buyback and cancellation program in the amount of 40 trillion won, alongside a commitment to allocate more than half of its free cash flow to shareholders between 2025 and 2027.

Samsung's CFO noted in the last investor call that the company is examining an update to the shareholder reward policy, even referring to the possibility of a special dividend. However, as of the time of the report, Samsung has not officially confirmed the published details.

For investors, a program of this scale could be particularly significant. Distributing large sums through dividends or share buybacks can increase stock attractiveness and signal to the market that the company believes in its ability to continue generating significant cash flow.

The move may also affect the South Korean capital market. Samsung is one of the key companies in the country, so a significant change in its capital distribution policy may influence how other Korean companies treat their shareholders.

At the same time, the move provides another picture of the economic impact of the artificial intelligence revolution. Growing demand for AI infrastructure not only increases the revenues of chip manufacturers but may also allow them to return huge sums to investors. If the plan is approved in the reported scope, it may become one of the most prominent moves this year in the field of shareholder rewards.
