Furniture Giant Southern Motion Files for Bankruptcy
The furniture manufacturer, which employs hundreds of workers, has filed for creditor protection under Chapter 11. Despite market concerns, the company has received legal approval to continue paying employee salaries and benefits.
Another upheaval in the manufacturing and furniture sector in the USA: the American furniture manufacturer "Southern Motion", one of the largest and most significant employers in the northern Mississippi region, has filed an official bankruptcy petition.
The petition was filed in federal court under the Chapter 11 process. This procedure is known as a creditor arrangement and a reorganization move, aimed at allowing companies in financial distress to continue operating their businesses while undergoing financial recovery.
The positive news for the hundreds of families dependent on the company is that at this stage, operations are not frozen. New legal documents show that the court is backing the company and has authorized "Southern Motion" to continue paying the full salaries of its employees, alongside maintaining all employee benefits throughout the process.
At the time of filing, the company employed about 645 workers. Another encouraging piece of news is that the bankruptcy documents do not indicate that the company has carried out any wave of layoffs among the workforce.
The legal process surrounding the future of the manufacturer is expected to continue throughout the coming autumn months. According to the court's schedule, the next decisive legal hearing regarding the matter is set for October 7 and will be discussed in the federal court in the city of Oxford.
