OpenAI's Medical Chat to Train on Sheba Hospital Database
Sheba Medical Center has signed a strategic agreement with OpenAI, becoming the first hospital outside the US to gain access to the company's specialized medical AI models.
The Sheba Medical Center, through its innovation arm ARC, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with OpenAI that will grant medical teams in Israel access to the medical models of the artificial intelligence giant. Thus, Sheba becomes the first hospital outside the USA to utilize the company's set of dedicated medical models.
As reported by Calcalist, the agreement was signed with high-level leadership at OpenAI, including Nate Gross, Head of Healthcare. In August, a delegation from Sheba is expected to travel to OpenAI's headquarters for a series of meetings. The agreement covers OpenAI for Healthcare models, including ChatGPT Health, which were launched last January and are currently available in only a small number of US hospitals.
The model is designed for physicians to assist in decision-making and developing patient treatment plans based on existing research. It is an encrypted and secure system built specifically for hospital environments. The cooperation will grant Sheba doctors early access to advanced AI models before their general public release and deepens the research partnership as part of the company's health program.
Dedicated working groups at Sheba will be exposed to various development stages, participate in OpenAI's global events, and develop internal applications adapted for the system. Furthermore, Sheba's treatment protocols will be integrated into OpenAI's models, allowing for future treatment recommendations specifically adapted to Israel's unique characteristics.
At an operational level, clinicians and researchers at Sheba will be able to enter patient case descriptions and receive references to relevant studies and articles. Every response includes citations, journal references, and publication dates, enabling medical staff to verify the research basis behind every recommendation. The platform will also support administrative workflows, helping to reduce documentation load and improve organizational efficiency.
The project joins a series of AI systems already operating at Sheba, including the startup AIDOC for decoding imaging tests for rapid cardiac diagnosis and the SmartER platform in the emergency room for automatic clinical documentation. The ARC innovation center was established in 2019 by CEO Prof. Yitshak Kreiss and Chief Innovation Officer Eyal Zimlichman. OpenAI stated: "The healthcare system is one of the areas where artificial intelligence can contribute most significantly. We are excited to collaborate with Sheba to make advanced AI capabilities accessible to doctors, researchers, and professional teams."
