A groundbreaking study has found that Botox injections can help millions of people around the world suffering from abnormal and severe scarring following surgeries, injuries, or combat. The Israeli Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgeons clarifies that this new scientific knowledge can be applied in Israel very soon.

Botox, mostly known for wrinkle smoothing, is now emerging as a therapeutic tool of immense significance in reconstructive and aesthetic medicine. A comprehensive review of studies, published in a leading scientific journal in the field of plastic surgery, presents a completely new indication: an impressive improvement in the appearance of new scars and the prevention of abnormal scarring.

According to the study, about 100 million people worldwide develop new scars each year. Of these, about 11 million suffer from abnormal and irregular scarring. This phenomenon is usually caused by a disruption in the skin's natural healing mechanism and an overproduction of collagen, and is divided into two main types:

  • Hypertrophic scars are particularly thick, red, and raised, remaining within the boundaries of the original incision.

  • Keloids are aggressive, raised scars that continue to grow and extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound into healthy skin.

Beyond the aesthetic damage, these scars are often accompanied by pain, persistent itching, restricted movement, and significant emotional suffering. The risk of development is higher among young people, those with thick or dark skin, and those with a genetic predisposition.

As part of the meta-analysis, researchers analyzed data from 19 different studies involving 686 patients. The findings showed that the use of botulinum toxin consistently led to narrower scars, improved skin texture, and a significant increase in patient satisfaction. The researchers explained that the substance affects the healing process through several mechanisms:

  • Controlled and temporary paralysis of the muscles adjacent to the wound reduces the tension and physical load applied to the edges of the recovering skin, creating a stable healing environment.

  • Reduction of neurogenic inflammation—the substance inhibits the secretion of inflammation-promoting agents, contributing to cleaner and smoother wound healing.

Dr. Carlos Zabaleta Corvera, the lead researcher from the Universidad Científica del Sur in Lima, Peru, stated:

"It looks like a super promising tool for preventing scars and improving their quality from the very first moment. The value of the treatment is particularly high in areas with high movement such as the face, neck, chest, abdomen, and the area around the eyes, where muscle movement exerts constant tension on the skin."
