Lapid Says Recent Events End Unity Government Hopes Under Netanyahu
Opposition leader Yair Lapid stated that recent political developments and US election results eliminate chances for a unity government under Netanyahu. Meanwhile, change bloc leaders agreed to recommend Gadi Eisenkot for the mandate.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid stated on Wednesday that recent remarks by Shin Bet Director David Zini and the outcomes of the US midterm elections completely eliminate any possibility of forming a unity government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking against the backdrop of ongoing coalition talks, Lapid argued that keeping Netanyahu in power poses a severe threat to national security and democracy.
Coalition Blocs and Leadership Disputes
Lapid's remarks follow a high-stakes meeting held on Tuesday at the Dan Acadia Hotel in Herzliya, where five leaders of the change bloc—Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman, Yair Golan, and Yair Lapid—convened ahead of consultations at the President's Residence. The leaders agreed to recommend Gadi Eisenkot to President Isaac Herzog for the mandate to form the next government. However, deep divisions remain regarding key positions, including the appointment of the next Knesset Speaker, with Lieberman supporting Lapid while Eisenkot seeks the post for himself.
Further friction within the bloc concerns the potential composition of the incoming government. Lieberman rules out a minority government relying on Arab parties, whereas Yair Golan advocates for cooperation. Meanwhile, Eisenkot is exploring possible understandings with ultra-Orthodox factions.
Likud Strategy and Presidential Consultations
Within the Likud party, officials believe that the most prudent strategy is to let Eisenkot navigate the complex political landscape without early interference from Netanyahu. Likud sources suggest that Eisenkot's path is fraught with insurmountable parliamentary obstacles and that any minority government he might form would quickly collapse over budgets and legislation. President Isaac Herzog is set to begin formal consultations with Knesset factions on Wednesday to decide on the mandate assignment.
