While the successful fantasy franchise 'The Lord of the Rings' prepares for a cinematic comeback at the end of 2027, actor Sean Astin – who played the beloved character of Samwise Gamgee – reveals the heavy economic price he paid for participating in the legendary trilogy.
In a candid interview with the British newspaper 'The Guardian', Astin detailed the distress he fell into and the frustrating gap between global fame and a bank account that remained empty. Despite the historic success of the films, Astin received a modest base salary of only about $75,000 for each film.
The low salary, which he signed for in advance, was not enough to cover the expenses of the house he purchased, which forced him to sell the property:
'There was a total disconnect between the attention I was getting and how much money we actually had. It wasn't a lot of money. In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated for such a small amount for the trilogy.'
Astin's distress stemmed from the studios' production method: filming the three movies simultaneously prevented the actors from the possibility of renegotiating their salary after the trilogy became a hit. Astin was not alone in the struggle – Orlando Bloom earned only $175,000 for all three films together, and Cate Blanchett even stated in the past that the actors actually 'got free sandwiches'.
Today, when he is in a much more stable financial situation and against the backdrop of reports about the new film 'The Hunt for Gollum', Astin looks back with a smile and clarifies that he learned the lesson: if he is asked to return to the set, this time he will stand his ground and demand a completely different salary.
