Everyone knows this moment: you finished eating, washed the glasses, and returned the dish sponge to its regular place. The kitchen might look shiny, but behind the polished appearance hides a rather disturbing truth. It turns out that the object you used to clean the plate carries more live bacteria than the trash can, a toilet handle, or even the sole of a shoe. A study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports found that the used kitchen sponge is the most bacteria-laden object in the entire house.

What is really happening inside the sponge?

The research team discovered no less than 362 different species of bacteria inside used kitchen sponges. To understand the density, the researchers measured and found up to 54 billion bacterial cells in one cubic centimeter — a volume roughly equal to the size of a sugar cube. Five of the ten most common bacteria found belong to "risk group 2," bacteria that can cause diseases.

The Clemson University Home and Garden Information Center also presented a worrying picture: after just two weeks of normal use, an average kitchen sponge carries about 8 million bacteria. Their food safety guide even found that 75% of household kitchen sponges and dishcloths tested positive for coliform bacteria. In fact, every time you wipe the counter or wash a fork, you are not really cleaning — you are redistributing the bacteria across the surfaces.

Why doesn't dish soap help?

Most of us act on a simple intuitive assumption: if we use dish soap, the sponge must be cleaning itself in the process. Unfortunately, the reality is completely different. Clemson University food safety experts explained that regular dish soap does not significantly reduce the amount of bacteria in a soiled sponge. The role of soap is to remove grease and food residues from the outer surface, but it is unable to penetrate the sticky and stubborn layer of bacteria that establishes itself inside the sponge.


The easy and safe way for real disinfection

The good news is that there is a simple, fast, and completely free solution, based on research by the USDA Food Safety and Technology Laboratory. The researchers tested five common methods people try to clean sponges: soaking in bleach, lemon juice, plain water, using a microwave, and washing in a dishwasher.

The results showed that soaking in bleach, lemon juice, or plain water eliminated only between 37% and 87% of the bacteria — which still leaves millions of active and dangerous bacteria. In contrast, the other two methods proved to be a complete success.

Method one: one minute in the microwave

In the USDA experiment, heating a wet sponge in the microwave for 60 seconds on high power destroyed 99.99999% of the bacteria. Another study by the University of Florida supported the findings and showed that two minutes of heating at full power killed more than 99% of bacteria, viruses, and parasites — even in sponges that were soaked in highly contaminated water.

To do this correctly and safely at home, first rinse the sponge of food residues and wet it well so that it is saturated with water but not dripping. Moisture is essential to prevent the sponge from igniting or burning inside the appliance. Now, place it in the microwave and run it for one to two minutes on high power.

Method two: the dishwasher

If you prefer not to use the microwave, the second method that proved effective in the study is to simply put the sponge in the dishwasher. All you need to do is place the sponge in the dishwasher and run it on a full program that includes a heated dry cycle. The combination of detergents and high temperature during the drying stage will do the job and leave your sponge clean and safe for reuse.
