The peak of summer is here: The Ministry of Health issued a special warning on Thursday regarding a severe heatwave expected to hit most of the country from Friday (31.7) through Sunday (2.8). The Ministry urges the public to take precautions, especially those in high-risk groups.

Who is at highest risk?

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the elderly, infants and children under four, pregnant women, individuals with cardiovascular or chronic diseases, those suffering from obesity, patients on specific medications, and anyone performing strenuous physical activity are at increased risk of heatstroke and dehydration. It is recommended to consult with a physician regarding personal safety guidelines for these hot days.

Guidelines for the public

The Ministry of Health recommends:

  • Avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours.

  • Avoiding unnecessary physical exertion.

  • Drinking water frequently, even if you do not feel thirsty.

  • Staying in air-conditioned environments as much as possible.

  • Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, light clothing, and sunscreen when outdoors. Drivers are advised to take frequent breaks to refresh, especially on long journeys.

Do not leave children or animals in vehicles

The Ministry reminds the public that infants, children, the elderly, or vulnerable individuals must never be left in a non-air-conditioned vehicle unattended—even for a short time. Furthermore, animals should not be left in vehicles or structures without water, proper ventilation, and a suitable temperature.

Planning a trip? Rethink your route

Due to the extreme heat, the Ministry recommends avoiding nature hikes in the coming days. Those who choose to travel should plan their route in advance, adapt to weather conditions, carry sufficient water, and avoid exertion during peak heat hours.

Signs requiring immediate medical attention

Heatstroke is a medical emergency where the body cannot cool itself. If you notice high body temperature, red and hot skin, severe headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or a decrease in consciousness, call MADA immediately and begin cooling the person until medical teams arrive.

Staying hydrated, remaining in cool areas, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure can prevent dangerous situations and significantly reduce the risks posed by the heavy heat expected this weekend.
